Climate Smart is a Canadian owned company and world leader in the field of measuring, reporting and verifying greenhouse gas emissions from large scale aggregated emission reduction projects.
Our distinctive excellence is built on eight years of experience in the development, aggregation and sale of carbon offsets. To-date we have developed 39 carbon credit projects, and created over 2.5 million credits with a value of over $30 million USD.
Successful project development is founded on the principles of high-quality credits. High quality means having the experience and expertise to identify risk areas, then designing robust business processes which can successfully mitigate these risks and eliminate double-counting.
Reducing Emissions from Deforestation and Forest Degradation (REDD) is a mechanism developed by the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change. REDD motivates developing countries to keep their forests standing through incentives. REDD is more than reducing deforestation, it includes conservation, sustainable management of forests and enhancing forest carbon stocks.
Deforestation comes in many forms, fires, clear cutting for agriculture, unsustainable logging, bio fuels, mining, and climate change. On average 46-58 thousand square miles of forest are lost each year! This is 48 football fields every MINUTE!
‘Blue carbon’ is the carbon stored and sequestered by the oceans and coastal ecosystems such as mangroves, seagrass, and coastal wetlands.
Coastal ecosystems hold massive amounts of carbon. When these ecosystems are destroyed, this large volume of stored carbon is released, negatively contributing to global climate change. In the United States the Louisiana coast is losing wetlands at a rate of one football field every hour. Wetland restoration can prevent the loss of thousands of square miles each year, while generating carbon offsets in the process. Wetland restoration provides more than double the number of jobs as the oil & gas and construction industries combined.
Climate Smart Group works directly with companies like New Orleans-based Tierra Resources, whose primary mission is to conserve, protect and restore coastal wetland ecosystems by creating innovative solutions that support investment in to wetlands. Carbon finance creates opportunities for companies to invest in wetland restorations projects to offset their greenhouse gas emissions. Tierra Resources offers turn-key approaches to wetland carbon offset projects and are responsible for each step in the process that leads to revenues from carbon credits.
